All About Facial Serums

What on earth are serums?

If you’re like the rest of us, you probably slather lotion or cream on your face every day - perhaps once in the morning under your makeup, and again at night to refresh your skin while you sleep. And that’s just fine and dandy - lotion is an excellent moisturizer. But there’s a way to deliver a whole host of other benefits - like anti-aging, healing, and more - to your skin. Welcome to the world of facial serums! Let us show you around…

What is a serum?

Serums are basically a moisturizer with superpowers. They’re little bottles brimming with a concentrated combination of all sorts of oils (and sometimes other ingredients) that benefit your skin in a bunch of different ways. Serums are known as the workhorses of the facial care world, because they pack a mighty punch in a small package.

What do serums do?

They moisturize, yes, but their mad skills don’t stop there. Serums are usually made up of a specific combination of oils, each with its own special talent. Some serums work fantastically for oily and acne-prone skin, with oils that help control breakouts and relieve inflammation. Others are formulated for normal to dry skin and often contain different ingredients, like avocado oil, which helps to hydrate and moisturize skin.

The best serums (like our Clarifying Serum and Forever Young Serum) have powerful antioxidants that help fight aging and regenerate skin cells, special oils that lighten and brighten the skin, and a blend of omegas that do all sorts of jobs from boosting radiance to promoting healing. Ours also (obviously) contains Matcha Green Tea powder that reduces inflammation and fights the free radicals that accelerate skin aging.

How do I use it?

A little goes a long way with serums. They’re concentrated powerhouses of goodness, so you’ll only need 2-3 drops. They’re best to use after cleansing and toning. Just warm it up a bit in your palms and gently press on your face and neck. Give it a few seconds to get in there (serums absorb really fast!), and you’re good to move on to your next step. Once or twice a day is more than enough to reap all the benefits.

Do I really need it?

You may be looking at the price tag per volume of serums and wondering if it’s worth the bucks. Yes, serums are pricier than lotions or essences, but for good reason. Remember how we said that serums are extra concentrated? There isn’t excess water or thickeners in a serum, so you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck. All the different oils that go into those little drops have an important job to do and are made to work well in tiny amounts, so one little bottle should last you for several months.

Do I need a serum and a moisturizer?

It’s up to you, but serums and moisturizers are definitely different. Unlike lotions and creams, serums are super lightweight, and they’re made up of smaller molecules, so they can penetrate into deeper layers of your skin to hydrate and heal from deep down. You may find after using a serum that you don’t need your daily moisturizer anymore. But if you have particularly dry, or even normal skin, you may want to stick with both. You can apply a serum after cleansing but before moisturizing and watch the magic happen.

How do I pick one?

First, you’ll want to assess your skin type and match your serum to your needs. But don’t stop there. As serums become more popular, you’ll find them everywhere, and one is not the same as the next. The best serums use organic ingredients and oils that are carefully processed for maximum benefit. Look for a serum that has more than just a few types of oils, because each one does something different for your skin.
