Want Better Skin? Add This Step to Your Skincare Routine

My grandmother always says there are no unrefined women, there are only lazy women. A bit harsh maybe, but it’s stuck with me all these years. Growing up, my grandmother and mom have always used a gentle toner after washing their faces. Good skin is not 100% from genetics - rather, it is created and then carefully maintained, day by day. There are a few things that are essential for glowing good skin, and a gentle facial toner is definitely one of them. We’d love to introduce you to the wonders of facial toners, and explain why my grandmother and mom had it right all those years ago.

What Is a Facial Toner?

A facial toner is an important step in between cleansing and facial serums/moisturizers. It acts as a vital additional cleansing step after your face wash, removing excess oils from clogged pores and lifting leftover makeup that your cleanser missed. While this is especially helpful for oily and acne prone skin, a gentle toner can also multitask as a calming and anti-inflammatory agent for drier skin (like mine) in prepping the skin for the next step in your skincare regimen: locking in moisture by applying facial serum or oil.

What Do Facial Toners Do?

The best toner for all skin type is alcohol-free and made with organic and natural botanicals and pH-balancing ingredients such as witch hazel and willow bark. It shouldn’t contain any fragrance or coloring, which can irritate the skin. Instead, pick one that’s made with natural ingredients (like ours!). Think about what you are putting on your precious skin - it should be as important as if you’re choosing products for your baby!

If you have sensitive and/or dry skin, look for ingredients such as aloe, calendula flower (known as the superstar for tough skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and more), rose, witch hazel, and other alcohol-free ingredients. These will help to calm and ease skin irritation, and also hydrate your skin.

For oily and acne-prone skin, also always look for alcohol-free and natural ingredients - like witch hazel, willow bark, and rose, to create a balanced pH level (between 4 to 5) for the skin, and prevent it from being stripped of its natural sebum, which protects skin from being too dry and produce even more sebum (oil).

How Do I Use It?

Soak a cotton ball or pad with the toner, then apply on neck and face with an upward motion. You can also directly spray the facial toner/mist on your face. We also recommend spraying our toner generously on your neck and chest area as well - these are delicate areas of our skin that need as much attention as our faces, but are often forgotten.

One of the benefits of using facial toner/mist is that it prepares your skin for the next step - which is facial serum or moisturizer. By hydrating your skin beforehand, your facial serum becomes even more effective by locking in the moisture when its applied, which also helps you use less product.

Do I Really Need It?

Yes! For those with dry/sensitive skin, a gentle, hydrating facial toner or mist is a must. These skin types are in need of a calming, anti-inflammatory, and hydrating toner/mist. For oily and more blemish-prone skin types, the benefit is more than just pH-balancing - an all natural facial toner/mist like ours is needed for its beneficial ingredients such as organic witch hazel and organic willow bark. Organic Willow bark contains salicylic acid, Beta Hydroxy Acid or BHA, which is a natural gentle exfoliant that helps fight acne. It also removes dead skin cells and regenerates smooth and radiant skin.

How Do I Pick One?

First, you’ll want to check your current facial toner/mist and read the ingredients. Be aware of things like parabens, phenoxyethanol, fragrance, or colors. Many over-the-counter facial toner and mists contain these harmful ingredients. Remember, your skin is your largest organ, and what you put on it will penetrate into your skin and go into your body and bloodstream. Be picky about what you put on your skin!

The best facial toner/mist uses organic ingredients that are carefully processed for maximum benefit. Look for a facial toner that has the ingredients we mentioned above, because these ingredients can do wonders for your skin without being harsh. Also, pick one that is travel friendly - under 3.4 liquid ounces is super important since I never check bags (I travel super light!). Our toner is ultra travel-friendly and you can easily carry it in your purse, which is great for a pick-me-up mist anytime of day.

So many of you are already in love with our facial mask, scrub, and serums, and we’re proud to introduce this the new superstar to your skincare regimen. Give it a try - we’re confident you’ll love it!
